Roleplaying > Roll-Playing: Deemphasizing Dice in Your Games

I know, dice are important. We all love the clicky clacks. But can we allow for other ways to enjoy our game at the table?

Brace yourselves, because this might just be a scorching hot take. I know I'm going to get some dissenting comments, but I feel that too many popular RPGs place an overwhelming emphasis on stats and dice rolls rather than fostering compelling interactions between characters and NPCs. While I understand the necessity of numerical systems for facilitating epic encounters and battles, the excessive focus on skills and attributes tends to slow down the pace and inadvertently encourages min-maxing and an unhealthy fixation on big numbers.

But what if we reimagined a world without stats altogether? A world where the narrative takes center stage, unencumbered by the shackles of numbers. Certain games have already begun paving the way by reducing the reliance on stats, allowing for a more streamlined and immersive experience. Titles like Little Game Masters and Break!! RPG have trimmed down the number of stats required, enabling players to engage in a wide range of activities without constantly cross-referencing skills or attributes. Taking it a step further, games like City of Mist and Legend in the Mist have entirely abandoned numerical stats, instead employing tags and statuses to denote character progression and situational developments.

My firm belief is that more Game Masters should prioritize the roleplay over the roll, fostering an enriched gaming experience for all participants. By deemphasizing the obsession with numbers and embracing the power of collaborative storytelling, we can unlock new realms of imagination and truly elevate our games to new heights.

The Dice Dictator's Reign Must End

First off, when we overemphasize dice rolls, our game can start to feel a bit... mechanical. It's like every decision has to go through a number-crunching filter, and that can seriously dampen the spontaneous magic that makes TTRPGs so special. Instead of strategizing and problem-solving, we're left watching the dice dictate our fate, which can be a major creativity killer. And who wants to feel like they're just going through the motions?

Moreover, this fixation on dice outcomes can discourage players from exploring non-combat solutions to conflicts. Imagine bypassing an intriguing diplomatic engagement or a cunning bit of trickery just because the rules say your charisma isn't high enough, or the dice gods weren't smiling on you today. That's a lot of missed opportunities for storytelling gold!

And then, there's the disconnect from our characters. If we're always rolling to see how they react or what they achieve, are we really roleplaying, or are we just roll-playing? This detachment can lead players to feel less engaged with their characters' personalities and growth, which is a bit like reading a book but not caring about the protagonist. This is when players start perusing their phone or zoning out. Not exactly the immersive experience we aim for, right?

Lastly, when dice become the stars of the show, the narrative often gets nudged out of the spotlight. Story arcs and character development take a back seat to the next dice roll. But isn't the lure of TTRPGs the ability to collaborate in weaving compelling stories and undertaking epic adventures?

Breathing Life Into Your Character

If our aim is to shift the focus away from dice rolling, we must channel that energy into elements that elevate the game experience. A compelling avenue is to accentuate the characters' core beliefs, flaws, and intricate backstories. Imagine a paladin's unwavering conviction swaying the mayor to prioritize the town's defense over yielding to a gang of ruffians. Envision a cleric's profound reverence for the local deity carrying more weight than a mere skill number. It's evident that describing actions, not merely relying on rolls, should be encouraged among players. As Game Masters, we can disregard the need for rolls and empower players to demonstrate their success through their narratives.

One effective technique is introducing non-dice social challenges and encounters, allowing players to triumph without the need for dice rolls. Admittedly, some game systems like Pathfinder 2E heavily emphasize rolling mechanics, presenting a challenge. However, even within such frameworks, Game Masters can exercise discretion and permit occasional leeway. Rather than fixating solely on binary outcomes, we might need to explore stakes beyond mere success or failure. The concept of "failing forward," which I've previously discussed, perfectly aligns with this mindset, enabling meaningful progression regardless of dice results.

While working on social challenges, include ways where the characters can incorporate their backstories too! This might open up more non-dice challenges later on.

Incentivizing In-Character Awesomeness

Now it's time to incentivize the players who have embraced this new storytelling-centric approach. Depending on your game system, you can reward them with advantages, hero points, or any other relevant system-specific bonuses. When you do, make sure to explicitly commend their creative roleplaying efforts. Let the whole table know that the bonus is a direct result of their contribution to bringing the narrative to life. Players will be more invested in their characters when they see that it genuinely matters.

When a player makes a dramatic choice that shapes the story, highlight it. Make it the focal point of the table's attention and let it drive the narrative forward. Some of the most amazing gaming moments I've experienced have been when the spotlight was on an individual player's incredible roleplaying prowess, elevating the game to new heights. Then, at a later point, pass that spotlight to another player, rotating it around so that everyone gets their chance to truly shine.

By incentivizing and spotlighting incredible roleplaying moments, you create a positive feedback loop that encourages players to continually invest in their characters and the shared narrative experience. It's a surefire way to foster an environment where roleplaying takes precedence over roll-playing.

Finding the Sweet Spot Between Roleplaying and Roll-Playing

Now, don't get me wrong here - I'm not saying we should completely ditch dice rolling altogether. It still has its place, even in those low-stat games I mentioned. Certain parts of an adventure just need those dice, right?

But what I really want is to take that dice focus down a few notches. Instead of it always being a hard pass/fail situation, we should shift towards more nuanced outcomes. A bunch of games out there use this "success with complications" thing that I'm a huge fan of. So rather than a total fail on a roll, you still succeed, but there's some narrative cost or twist that comes with it.

That right there? That's pure storytelling fuel. And if you can really get your players to buy into it, they might even start pitching their own ideas for what those complications could be. Now that's the kind of invested, collaborative RP energy I'm talking about! Let's bring the dice rolls into the narrative instead of just having them be abrupt stopping points.

Embracing the True Essence of TTRPG

At the end of the day, shifting the primary focus away from dice rolls and number-crunching towards rich, immersive roleplaying is a paradigm shift that promises to elevate your gaming experience. By deemphasizing the singular pursuit of making big rolls, players can forge deeper connections with their characters' lives, motivations, and personality quirks.

The stories you weave collectively at the table transform from being mere sequences of encounters into collaborative, character-driven narratives brimming with unforgettable moments. Each dramatic decision, each instance of insightful roleplaying, takes on greater significance as the group buys into this mindset.

Rather than the game feeling like a series of pass/fail checks gating your progress, the journey itself becomes the reward. Combat, social encounters, and exploration all serve as catalysts for players to shine, to fully inhabit their characters in rich, nuanced ways. It's a paradigm that demands investment, but in doing so, immerses you in a way that pure dice can never replicate.

So go forth, embrace the art of roleplaying wholeheartedly. Relegate the dice to a supporting role, and bask in the unparalleled magic of collaboratively crafting living, breathing stories with your friends. That's where the true rewards of our hobby reside. Make your next game night all about embodying your character - I guarantee you won't regret it.
